Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination Rules 2021)
Maritime Administration of Pakistan has issued guidelines on the medical examination of seafarers. Seafarers are required to undergo medical examinations to reduce risks to other crewmembers and for the safe operation of the ship, as well as to safeguard their personal health and safety.
The MLC, 2006, and the STCW Convention, 1978, as amended, require a seafarer to hold a medical certificate, detail the information to be recorded and indicate certain specific aspects of fitness that need to be assessed.
The Guidelines aim to ensure that the standards of medical fitness for seafarers required under the provision of Section 123 of Merchant Shipping Ordinance 2001, Maritime Labor Convention, 2006 and International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978, as amended.
